Cyndi Lauper‘s “detour” into country music is coming this spring. DETOUR — an album featuring the pop singer’s renditions of country classics from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s — is due out May 6.
The album will feature contributions from some Country Music Hall of Famers, including Willie Nelson, Vince Gill and Emmylou Harris, who’s featured on the title track. Jewel and her yodeling skills also make an appearance, on a cover of the Patsy Montana hit “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” which was the first country song by a woman to sell 1 million copies. Closing out DETOUR is a rendition of Dolly Parton‘s “Hard Candy Christmas,” which features award-winning bluegrass artist Alison Krauss.
While the collection of country covers may seem like a big change forLauper, it turns out that it’s not very far from her roots. “When I was a really young kid, country music was pop music, so this is what we grew up listening to,” she recalls. “These songs are part of some of my earliest memories so it has been an absolute thrill to revisit them.”
