Tonight, ABC’s musical series Greatest Hits focuses on songs from 2000 to 2005, and the show features an unexpected mashup of Kenny Loggins‘ 1979 smash “This Is It” and a 2003 hit by Train.
Loggins tells ABC Radio it was his idea to duet with Train singer Pat Monahan on a mashup of his tune and Train’s “Calling All Angels.”
“When you put one over the top of the other, they sort of answer each other, lyrically,” explains Loggins. “I noticed that the lyric was essentially the same idea…you’re asking for some kind of celestial help. So the two seem to mash up really well.”
The duet also offered a chance for Loggins and Monahan to meet in person.
“Pat and I have been talking to each other for five or six years now,” Loggins reveals. “We’ve never had the chance to actually do any real work together, so this is our first opportunity.”
Monahan tells ABC Radio that Loggins first reached out to him by phone years ago because Train’s 2003 album My Private Nation had helped him get through a breakup. “We bonded on that call, and then just texted once in a while, and then this came up,” Pat says. “And so that was the first time we ever met.”
Monahan adds, “I love Kenny…I think he’s one of the most underrated, great songwriters/singers of all time. So it was a lot of fun.”
Greatest Hits airs at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
